Imagine… Reshaping AYA Cancer Care Through Immersive Experience

2024 was a year of creativity and innovation unlike any other. For almost a year, we worked closely with a talented team of AYA co-researchers, applied theatre professionals and our long-time research partner, Professor Alice O’Grady at the University of Leeds, to co-develop and present an immersive theatre performance giving a felt-sense of what it is truly like to experience cancer as an AYA. The performance, entitled, Imagine…, debuted to capacity audiences of cancer care providers, researchers and AYAs participating in the BC Cancer Summit that year and continues to serve as a focal point for national conferences and education sessions.

Imagine… gives a unique and emotive perspective into the distinct challenges faced by AYAs navigating cancer while integrating learnings from earlier performance-as-research based initiatives including:

  • The 2020 PAR3TY Project undertaken with UK teens and the University of Leeds to produce a series of powerful and perspective changing videos about the teens’ cancer experiences

  • The 2022 Yes…and – Unravelling the Complexities of Young Adult Cancer workshop series which brought together a group of Canadian AYAs to co-create a collection of videos sharing their cancer experiences in deeply emotive and reflective ways.

View works from each of the above via our Creative Gallery.

The above research is generously supported by Royal Roads University, Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund, the Vancouver Foundation, Michael Smith Health Research, the University of Leeds, and BC Cancer.
